In an interview by STEVE KNOPPER

"Juliana Hatfield's new album, "In Exile Deo," opens old wounds and shares the blood with the rest of us.

... there's "Get In Line," the first song on the CD, a rocker with guitars as big and fat as The Who's "I Can't Explain," not to mention Hatfield's '90s hits "My Sister" and "Universal Heartbeat." And its inspiration came from an unlikely source. "I've been listening to a lot of ELO, and I wanted to write a song with the same sort of beat as 'Mr. Blue Sky,'" Hatfield said by phone from an Oklahoma City hotel. "It just brings me back to the time when music was so magical to me. I had a little transistor radio in my bed at night [in the '70s] with all these songs just kind of seeping into my consciousness."
